Can Drones Search Woodland for a Missing Pet?

Yes, but woodland is one of the more challenging environments for aerial searching. What can be covered depends almost entirely on how much of the ground is visible from above.

Woodland edges

Edges are often the most productive part of a woodland search, because the open ground beside a wood can be covered quickly and the boundary is visible from the air in a way the interior is not. Where a dog is missing under trees, see searching woodland for a missing dog.

Tracks and paths

Forestry tracks, rides and firebreaks give long open corridors that can be flown along with a clear view of the surface.

Clearings

Clearings, felled areas and gaps in the canopy give direct line of sight to the ground and are worth including in the search pattern.

Sparse tree cover

Young plantations, scattered trees and bare winter canopy allow more of the ground to be seen than dense summer leaf cover, though undergrowth and evergreen planting still obstruct the view.

Dense canopy

Where the canopy is closed, the ground beneath it is not visible from the air with any camera. That part of the wood has to be covered on foot.

Thermal limitations in woodland

Thermal imaging does not change this. It reads the first surface in the line of sight, which in closed woodland is the top of the canopy.

Thermal cameras cannot see through trees, branches, roofs, walls or dense vegetation.

Drones do not replace ground searching in woodland. The sensible split is to let the drone cover the open ground, edges and tracks quickly so that people on foot can concentrate on the areas the camera cannot see into.
