Can a Drone Help Find a Missing Cat?
Sometimes. A drone can help in certain missing cat searches, particularly where there is a defined open area that can be viewed from the air. It is much less useful where a cat may be hiding inside buildings, beneath vehicles, under decking or under dense vegetation.

When a drone search may help
- Fields and farmland.
- Open countryside and moorland.
- Clearings and open ground beside woodland.
- Large open areas that are slow to walk.
- Difficult terrain with good visibility from above.
When a drone search may be less useful
- Dense housing and built up streets.
- Inside buildings.
- Sheds, garages and outbuildings.
- Under parked vehicles.
- Under decking and garden structures.
- Dense woodland and thick vegetation.
- Any search where the area is undefined.
Can thermal cameras find cats?
Thermal cameras detect infrared radiation and temperature differences. They do not see through walls, roofs, trees or other solid objects, which is covered in more detail in can thermal cameras see through trees.
In open ground with clear line of sight, a warm animal can stand out against cooler surroundings. Under cover, inside a structure or beneath a vehicle, it will not.
Why search area matters
A drone is far more useful when there is a plausible area to search than when a cat could be anywhere. Confirmed sightings, terrain and time missing all help define an area worth flying.
