What can affect how long a cat is away
- Whether the cat normally roams outdoors.
- Whether the cat is trapped or shut inside a building or outbuilding.
- Whether the cat has been displaced into unfamiliar surroundings.
- Access to food and water.
- Injury or illness.
- The local environment, including roads and open ground.
- Weather and available shelter.
Should I keep searching?
Yes, and it helps to keep the search steady rather than intense for a day and then abandoned. Keep microchip details current, keep listings active with vets, rescues and local groups, and keep rechecking sheds, garages and other enclosed spaces.
Repeat the close in search regularly. A cat shut in somewhere may only be found once someone opens a door nobody had thought to check.
There is no point at which a search must stop. Cats have been reunited with their owners long after going missing.
